Analysis of KRAS and BRAF mutant colorectal cancers in a multi-ethnic population


Hawaii is often referred to as the melting pot because of its racial and cultural diversity. As a result, the diverse sample population has been the subject of research for many fields, one of which being cancer. Studies have shown that genetic variation associated with a multiracial population can have value as indicators of prognosis. This project evaluated the genetic variation of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients in Hawaii.

As a research employee at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu Hi, I was able to go through the histories of CRC patients and gather data such as, mutation type and race. I compiled the data and ran a preliminary statistical analysis which suggested that certain mutations were more prevalent within the population of Hawaii. Further data analysis was conducted with the help of Jared Acoba M.D. and Christopher Lum M.D. Findings were written up in an abstract and published in the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
